After Removal Care

Having your wisdom teeth removed is a very serious and painful surgical procedure that requires time and care to heal. After removal care is extremely important because you want to reduce the amount of swelling that occurs and you want to decrease the risk of infection as best you can. Some important instructions immediately following the procedure are;

  • Leave the gauze pad on for 30 minutes after your surgery then remove it
  • Avoid rinsing your mouth repetitively and avoid touching your mouth because it may cause the wound to bleed
  • Take your prescribed pain medicine as soon as you start to feel pain or discomfort in your mouth
  • Restrict your activities until you feel comfortable doing them again, do not stress / push yourself
  • Place ice packs on the side of your mouth to help relieve the pain

It is important to note that it is common for the wound to bleed after surgery. Bleeding is to be expected but if the bleeding becomes repetitive or common bite down on a gauze for 30 minutes to stop the bleeding. Some other common things you may experience after your surgery can include,

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
